Steamed Cabbage (Vegetables) Recipe

Never mind that steamed cabbage is packed full of essential nutrients like calcium and vitamin C or that it only has 11 itty bitty calories.
Before you add butter and salt and such.
Even then, a helping of steamed cabbage is a flavor-filled nutrition powerhouse. Stir in Caribbean favorites like salt fish or canned corned beef to turn this simple side dish into a quick weeknight supper entree.

Cabbage is the main ingredient in this Caribbean side dish that almost always contains several other vegetables.  In Jamaica steamed cabbage is served  as a side dish with various entrees at various meals.  Popular combinations include Steamed Cabbage and Corned beef for dinner and Saltfish and Cabbage for breakfast . Plump up this dish with other veggies to mage a vegan/ vegetarian entree. You will find steamed cabbage on local and international restaurant menus alike.  Serve with  meat and fried dumpling and ripe plantains, rice and peas, or any other side you wish for a complete meal.

Steamed Cabbage (Vegetables) Recipe

Cabbage is the main ingredient in this dish, aptly called steamed cabbage. Serve with rice for a vegetarian entrée or mixed with canned corned (bully) beef and served over rice.

  • 1 TB butter or margarine
  • 1 clove garlic chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 med. onion thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 med carrot cut into thin strips
  • 3 C. green cabbage shredded
  • 1 sm. bell pepper
  • 1 sprig thyme


  • Melt butter in saucepan. Add garlic, salt, onions and black pepper and carrot. Stir and let sauté for about 5 minutes. Stir in cabbage, pepper and thyme. Stir well, cover and let simmer and additional 7 to 10 minutes.


*Stir in ½ lb. cooked, flaked salt fish and serve with fried dumplings or fried green bananas to make a traditional Caribbean breakfast.
*Substitute 2 TB oil for butter and omit salt and black pepper to make this dish Ital.
